As the monsoon season arrives in Pakistan, rising humidity can quickly turn your kitchen pantry into a breeding ground for moisture, mould, and pantry pests. Staples like flour, rice, spices, and snacks are especially vulnerable if not stored properly. Here are five simple yet effective tips to keep your pantry fresh during the humid months.
Transfer dry goods such as flour, rice, lentils, sugar, and cereals into airtight glass or BPA-free plastic containers. This prevents moisture from seeping in and keeps insects away, helping ingredients stay fresh for longer.
Place small food-safe silica gel packets or moisture absorbers on pantry shelves. You can also keep a small bowl of baking soda in a corner to absorb excess humidity and reduce unpleasant odours.
Instead of stocking up for months, purchase dry goods in smaller batches during the monsoon. This reduces the chances of food spoiling before you can use it.
Humidity can cause spices to lose their aroma and form clumps. Store them in tightly sealed jars away from the stove, where steam and heat are most common. Avoid sprinkling spices directly over steaming pots.
Wipe pantry shelves weekly and check for signs of mould, dampness, or insects. Discard expired items and rotate older ingredients to the front so they are used first. A clean pantry is far less likely to attract pests.
A few simple habits can protect your pantry from the effects of Pakistan’s humid monsoon weather, keeping your ingredients fresh, safe, and ready for every meal.
